In order to determine the yield stability and genotype × environment interactions, 17 promising barley lines/varieties and three local controls (Jolge, Mahtab and CB-99-5) were evaluated in years 2022-2024. Experiment was conducted using randomized complete block design with three replications in eight stations in the cold regions of Iran including Karaj, Ardabil, Miandoab, Hamadan, Mashhad, Tabriz, Arak and Jolge Rokh. Drought tolerance of these genotypes including three local controls Jolge, Azaran and CB-99-4 were also evaluated under terminal drought conditions in Mashhad and Hamadan.
In total. two separate combined analysis of variance were performed, one for grain yields of genotypes under normal condition and other for grain yields of genotypes under terminal drought stress. First combined analysis of variance (normal condition) showed significant differences of the grain yield among genotype × location, year × location and genotype ×year × location interaction effects. Mean comparisons of yield among genotypes using Duncan multiple range test showed that genotypes No. 6, 7, 17, 15 and 5 with grain yields of 7.119, 7.081, 7.038, 7.035 and 7.020 t/ha, respectively, had the highest yields among genotypes tested. Second combined analysis of variance (drought stress) showed significant differences of the grain yield for location, genotype × location and genotype ×year × location interaction effects. Mean comparisons of yield among genotypes using Duncan multiple range test showed that genotypes No. 7, 13, 17, 6 and 15 with grain yields of 5.337, 5.235, 5.212, 5.176 and 5.129 t/ha, respectively, had the highest yields among genotypes tested. Since the genotype × location and genotype × year × location interaction effects were significant under normal condition, different stability parameters including AMMI method were employed to examine the effects of genotype × environment interaction and to determine adaptation of the genotype in details.
In total, based on yield mean, stability parameters and agronomic traits genotypes No. 6 (CB-01-6), 7 (CB-01-7), 13 (CB-01-13) and 17 (CB-01-17) with general adaptability for all regions under normal and terminal drought stress conditions and genotypes No. 5 (CB-01-5), 8 (CB-01-8), 9 (CB-01-9) and 10 (CB-01-10) with specific adaptability under normal conditions for Hamadan, Karaj, Jolge rokh and Ardabil, respectively, were recommended for on-farm trials in the cold regions of Iran.
